Cuccidati are classic Sicilian fig-filled cookies, traditionally made during Christmas but enjoyed year-round. They’re buttery pastry cookies filled with a rich, spiced fig-nut filling and topped with icing and sprinkles.
🍪 Ingredients
🧈 Cookie Dough
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2–4 tbsp milk (as needed for dough texture)
🍯 Fig Filling
- 2 cups dried figs (stems removed, chopped)
- ½ cup raisins (optional but traditional)
- ½ cup walnuts or almonds (finely chopped)
- ¼ cup honey
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp orange zest
- 2–4 tbsp orange juice (or water)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Optional: 2 tbsp rum or Marsala wine for authentic flavor
🍬 Icing (Optional but classic)
- 1½ cups powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp milk or lemon juice
- Sprinkles (rainbow or festive nonpareils)

1. Make the fig filling
- In a saucepan, combine chopped figs, raisins, orange juice, and a splash of water.
- Simmer on low for 10–15 minutes until soft and jam-like.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Stir in:
- nuts
- honey
- cinnamon
- cloves
- orange zest
- vanilla (and rum if using)
- Blend or pulse lightly if you want a smoother paste.
👉 Filling should be thick, sticky, and spreadable.
2. Make the dough
- Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
- Add eggs and vanilla; mix well.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually combine dry ingredients into wet mixture.
- Add milk as needed until dough forms.
- Chill dough for 30–60 minutes.
3. Assemble cookies
- Roll dough into long strips (about 3 inches wide).
- Spoon fig filling down the center.
- Fold dough over filling and seal edges.
- Lightly press and roll to smooth shape.
- Slice into 1–2 inch pieces.
4. Bake
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
- Place cookies on lined baking sheet
- Bake 15–20 minutes until lightly golden
Let cool completely before icing.
5. Decorate
- Mix powdered sugar with milk or lemon juice to make glaze.
- Drizzle or dip cookies.
- Add sprinkles immediately before icing sets.
