- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tsp sugar (optional)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ cup (1 stick) cold butter, cut into small pieces
- ¾ cup milk (plus a little extra if needed)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter with a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the milk just until a shaggy dough forms. Do not overmix.
- Drop heaping spoonfuls of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
- Serve warm with butter, jam, honey, or gravy.
Tips
- For extra-fluffy biscuits, keep the butter and milk cold.
- Brush the tops with melted butter right after baking.
- Add shredded cheddar, herbs, or a pinch of garlic powder for a savory variation.
Makes about 10–12 biscuits.
