How to Make Homemade Vanilla Sugar with Vanilla Beans
Ingredients
- 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
- 1–2 whole vanilla beans
Method
- Prepare the vanilla beans
- Split the vanilla beans lengthwise with a sharp knife.
- Scrape out the tiny vanilla seeds (vanilla caviar) if you want a stronger flavor.
- Combine with sugar
- Add the sugar to an airtight glass jar.
- Place the vanilla bean pieces and scraped seeds into the sugar.
- Mix well so the vanilla spreads throughout the sugar.
- Infuse the flavor
- Seal the jar tightly.
- Let it sit for at least 1–2 weeks in a cool, dry place.
- Shake the jar every few days to distribute the vanilla flavor.
- Use and maintain
- Use the vanilla sugar in coffee, tea, baking, cookies, cakes, whipped cream, oatmeal, or desserts.
- You can keep adding fresh sugar to the jar as it gets used; the vanilla beans will continue releasing flavor for months.
Tips for stronger vanilla flavor
- Use 2 vanilla beans per 2 cups of sugar for a rich, bakery-style taste.
- Grind dried vanilla bean pieces with some sugar in a blender or food processor for a more intense vanilla powder.
- Homemade vanilla sugar makes a great substitute for regular sugar when you want a natural vanilla aroma in recipes.
