Arepas are a staple food from Venezuela and Colombia made from pre-cooked cornmeal. They’re crispy on the outside, soft inside, and can be split and stuffed with endless fillings.
🧾 Ingredients (8–10 arepas)
- 2 cups (250 g) pre-cooked white cornmeal (masarepa)
- 2½ cups warm water (adjust as needed)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp oil or melted butter (optional, for softer dough)
👩🍳 Instructions
1. Make the dough
- In a large bowl, mix warm water + salt.
- Slowly add cornmeal while stirring.
- Mix until a soft dough forms (like play-dough texture).
- Let rest for 5–10 minutes so it fully hydrates.
2. Shape the arepas
- Divide dough into 8–10 balls.
- Flatten each into a disc about ½–¾ inch thick.
