Cornstarch Glass Floral Hearts & Flowers
These beautiful translucent decorations look like stained glass and can be used as window hangings, ornaments, gift tags, or decorative accents.
Materials
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- Food coloring (pink, red, purple, blue, yellow, or any desired colors)
- Heart and flower cookie cutters
- Parchment paper or silicone mat
- Small saucepan
- Spoon or silicone spatula
- Drinking straw (for hanging holes, optional)
- Ribbon or twine
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Cornstarch Glass Mixture
In a small saucepan, whisk together:
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly.
Continue stirring until the mixture becomes thick, glossy, and translucent, about 3–5 minutes.
Remove from heat.
Step 2: Add Color
Divide the mixture into separate bowls if using multiple colors.
Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and stir until evenly colored.
Step 3: Fill the Molds
Place cookie cutters on parchment paper or a silicone mat.
Spoon the colored cornstarch mixture into the cutters.
Spread evenly with the back of a spoon.
For a marbled effect, swirl two colors together with a toothpick.
Step 4: Create Hanging Holes
If making ornaments or sun catchers, use a drinking straw to create a hole near the top of each shape.
Step 5: Dry Completely
Allow the shapes to dry undisturbed for 24–48 hours.
Drying time depends on thickness, humidity, and room temperature.
The pieces should become firm and translucent.
Step 6: Remove and Finish
Carefully remove the cookie cutters.
Peel the shapes from the parchment paper.
Thread ribbon or twine through the holes if desired.
Decorative Ideas
- Layer flower and heart shapes together for a bouquet effect.
- Add fine glitter while the mixture is still wet.
- Press small dried flower petals into the surface.
- Create ombré colors by blending shades together.
- Hang in a sunny window for a stained-glass appearance.
Tips
- Keep pieces about 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick for best transparency.
- Thicker pieces take longer to dry and may remain cloudy.
- Store in a dry location, as cornstarch decorations can soften if exposed to moisture.
- These are decorative items and are not intended for eating.
Makes: 8–12 medium hearts and flowers, depending on size.
