This is actually a classic lazy “smothered hamburger steak” style bake, and it turns out very tender and saucy if done right.
Here’s how to do it properly:
🍔 Cream of Mushroom Hamburger Bake
🧂 Ingredients
- 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
- Salt & pepper
- 1 small onion (optional, sliced or chopped)
- 1 can cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk or water (to thin the soup slightly)
- Optional: garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, mushrooms, cheese
🔥 Instructions
- Form patties
Shape ground beef into medium-thick patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper. - Optional quick sear (recommended)
Brown patties in a pan for 2–3 minutes per side.
This adds flavor and prevents greasy texture. - Make sauce
In a bowl, mix:- 1 can cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk or water
- Optional: a splash of Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder
- Assemble
Place patties in a baking dish.
Add onions or mushrooms on top if using. - Pour soup over
Pour the mushroom soup mixture evenly over the raw or seared patties until mostly covered. - Bake
Cover with foil and bake at:- 180°C (350°F) for 45–60 minutes
until beef is fully cooked.
- 180°C (350°F) for 45–60 minutes
- Optional finish
Remove foil in the last 10 minutes and add cheese on top if you want it melted and golden.
🍽️ What you get
- Juicy hamburger patties
- Thick, savory mushroom gravy
- Soft onions/mushrooms
- Perfect over rice, mashed potatoes, or noodles
⚠️ Important tip
If you pour soup over completely raw patties, it still works—but:
- Bake covered so they cook evenly
- Make sure internal temperature reaches 71°C / 160°F
