Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy
A classic comfort-food dish featuring seasoned beef patties simmered in a rich onion gravy.
Ingredients
For the steaks
- 1½ lbs (680 g) ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
For the onion gravy
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Make the steaks
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently and form into 4–6 oval patties.
2. Brown the steaks
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
- Transfer to a plate (they do not need to be fully cooked through yet).
3. Prepare the onion gravy
- In the same skillet, melt the butter.
- Add the onions and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and caramelized.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and thyme.
- Simmer for 3–5 minutes until the gravy thickens.
4. Finish the dish
- Return the patties to the skillet.
- Spoon some gravy over them.
- Cover and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and tender.

Tip: For extra flavor, add 8 oz (225 g) sliced mushrooms to the onions while making the gravy. The mushrooms absorb the rich beefy flavors and pair perfectly with the Salisbury steak.
